Moving Made Easy

Your essential checklist for setting up utilities and more when relocating in England.

Essential Tasks for Moving Home in England

1. Pre-Move Planning

  • Notify relevant parties:

    • Inform your landlord (if renting) or solicitor (if buying/selling).

    • Provide notice as per your tenancy agreement or legal requirements.

  • Arrange transportation: Book a moving company or van hire.

  • Declutter: Sell, donate, or discard items you no longer need.

  • Purchase packing materials: Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, labels, and markers.

2. Setting Up Utilities and Services

To ensure a smooth transition, handle the following utilities and services:

Electricity and Gas
  • Notify your current provider about your move, providing your moving date and final meter readings.

  • Compare energy suppliers and set up an account with your new provider. Useful websites include uSwitch or Money Super Market.

  • Take initial meter readings at the new home upon arrival to avoid billing discrepancies.

Water and Sewerage
  • Contact the local water supplier for the new property (e.g., Thames Water, Anglian Water).

  • Provide final readings for your old property and set up a new account.

Broadband and Phone
  • Check if your current provider serves the new property. If not, research and set up a new service.

  • Plan installations early, as setup can take several weeks.

TV License
  • Update your address on your TV license or purchase a new one through TV Licensing.

Council Tax
  • Notify your current and new local council of your move.

  • Set up council tax payments for the new property.

3. Address Updates

Update your address with the following:

  • Government bodies:

    • DVLA for your driving licence and vehicle registration.

    • HMRC for tax purposes.

    • NHS or your GP surgery.

  • Financial institutions: Banks, building societies, loan providers, and insurers.

  • Memberships and subscriptions: Gym memberships, streaming services, and magazine subscriptions.

Use the Royal Mail redirection service to forward mail while updates are processed.

4. Moving Day Essentials

  • Prepare a moving day kit: Include important documents, snacks, phone chargers, and tools for unpacking.

  • Final checks at your old home:

    • Take photos of the property for your records.

    • Record final meter readings.

    • Ensure all keys are handed over.

  • At the new home:

    • Take initial meter readings.

    • Check the functionality of utilities (electricity, water, heating, broadband).

    • Ensure the property is clean and ready for unpacking.

5. Post-Move Tasks

  • Unpack strategically: Start with essentials (kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom).

  • Introduce yourself to neighbours: Building a good relationship early can be helpful.

  • Register for local services:

    • GP and dentist.

    • Schools for children (if applicable).

  • Review utility bills: Verify accuracy of initial readings and tariffs.

  • Register to vote: Update your electoral roll information.
